In June 2005 I was convinced I was going to be the next Chuck Klosterman. In December 2005 I was convinced I was going to freeze to death if I didn't get out of the Northwest. In February, I sucked it up. In March 2007 I was convinced I had something to offer to music criticism. In November 2008 I was convinced I had something to offer to touring musicians in the way of food and drinks. In September 2010 I was convinced I'd be a bartender for the rest of my life, and unhappy about it. In February 2011 I was paid to photograph and interview sound guys at the Grammys.

I have absolutely no idea what comes next. Come with? Follow me here and on Twitter

This is a picture I took for my work at Dolby Laboratories. Dolby hosted an event called the Fidelity Forum 2.0 last week (you can read my postings about Day One and Day Two on the Dolby Laboratories Tumblr), which afforded me the opportunity to hear all about the Lousie M. Davies Symphony Hall and its acoustic renovations from San Francisco Symphony General Manager John Kieser. It also gave me the chance to snap this frame, which features Mr. Kieser sitting on the stage. The large clear panels in the upper portion of the image can be raised and lowered to alter the acoustic characteristics of the wall, as well as for cleaning. There’s a million other little audio details in here, but I’ll let this, the first Friday Frame in a while, and a belated one at that, do most of the talking this time ‘round. Thanks for checking it out!

Dolby Laboratories: SXSWi (Interactive) ends while the Music festival moves into full swing

dolbylaboratories:

Hey y’all! Uh-oh, Austin must be rubbing off on me…

Since I last checked in I’ve seen a lot. More music, more barbecue, more technology, more panels, and did I mention more music? Wednesday was the first proper day of the music portion of SXSW, and it started off with a bang. From the…

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Maybe I’m supremely late to this party, but I’m glad I showed up. Something about this reminds me of Fox ‘N Wolf, softened up enough to be played as background music but arresting enough to jump out from the background in any given quiet moment. Really good stuff.

This industry is remarkably consistent. It puts out many of its crummiest movies in January and February every year, as evidenced by the fact that nine of the top ten grossing movies of the weekend failed to be certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, and the one that did also happens to be this year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, among others, and only kindof released this year.
No wonder, then, that this next weekend is the first in some time that there’s anything coming out I’m even thinking about seeing.

Huh. So let me get this straight: this university wants to train me to be some kind of developer type, so I can… barter my skills on a street corner in the hopes of eating? Does this actually count as advertising?Pretty sure that stock photo was meant for a “In This Economy” type story, guys. Just a hunch.

This was in my news feed on Facebook, courtesy of San Francisco’s 7x7 Magazine. “Go-sockless loafers” made me remember just how cool it is to be a dickhead. If you’re wondering what the hell I’m talking about, let me point you to this gem of a video from a bit over a year ago. It’s worth watching, but if you haven’t got the time for 2.72 minutes of brilliance, albeit slightly dated brilliance if 7x7 is recommending sockless loafing for the general public, skip ahead to about 2 minutes in for the relevant background:“Being A Dickhead’s Cool”
